Honeyberries are a relatively new fruit to Minnesota. These elongated berries, also referred to as Haskaps. They are extremely winter hardy and ripen around the time of June strawberries. A couple of weeks earlier than blueberries!
Each honeyberry plant comes in a 1 gallon pot and is ready to plant. The plants should reach 5 feet tall and are planted with similar spacing to blueberries, often 4 feet apart. But they do not require low pH soil like blueberries. The biggest pest for honeyberries is birds. Birds will go after ripe berries on your honeyberry bushes. Honeyberries require a second variety for pollination. Boreal Blizzard and Boreal Beauty can be pollinated by Boreal Beast. For every 4 plants of Blizzard and/or Beauty you want at least 1 of Beast.
These plants will be available starting Friday, May 12th at the farm. We are sorry but we are unable to ship plants.
This year we are offering the following varieties:
Boreal Blizzard: Earliest of the honeyberry varieties we offer. Will ripen in mid June. Was named Blizzard because its size and flavor stopped University of Saskatchewan researchers in their tracks. Has the largest berries on any honeyberry variety and has an excellent zingy flavor! Boreal Beast is its companion pollinator.
Boreal Beast: Ripens a week after Blizzard. It was released to serves as a pollinator for both the Boreal Blizzard and Boreal Beast varieties. Does not yield as high as Blizzard or Beauty and the berries are not as large. But the berries have great flavor and aroma.
Boreal Beauty: Ripens a week after Beast. So named because of its heart or oval shaped berries, which are good size, firm, and have great flavor. Boreal Beast is its companion pollinator.
