We're excited to offer plum trees for the first time this year as part of our plant sale!
We are offering bare root dormant plum trees. Bare root trees need to be planted within a day or two of when you pick them up from us so they don't dry out. The advantages to bare root trees are that they don't experience transplant shock when they are planted, they are easier to transport, and we can offer them at a lower price than potted trees. The trees are two years old. They are 5 to 7 feet tall with multiple branches.
The plum trees are semi-dwarf and will grow to 8 to 12 feet tall. These will need to be staked (supported) for the first two years. Plum trees generally need a second variety for pollination, but Mount Royal is an exception and does not. It is self-fruitful.
These trees will be available starting Friday, May 9th for pickup at the farm. We are sorry but we are unable to ship trees. We are offering the following variety of plums this year.
Mount Royal: Is a blue, European plum variety and is considered the best tasting blue plum cultivar in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Good eaten off tree and excellent for dessert, jam and preserves. Is self-fruitful, so doesn't need a second variety for pollination. Ripens Mid to Late August.
Pipestone: This vigorous tree produces large red fruit with yellow flesh that is sweet and juicy. The fruit can be eaten fresh, or used for cooking, preserves, jams, and jellies. Was released by the University of MN in 1942. Ripens Mid to Late August.
Superior: Is a cross between a Japanese and American plum. Tree produces large red fruit with yellow flesh that is sweet and juicy. Can be extremely productive producing lots of fruit. Was released by the University of MN in 1933. Ripens in Mid-August.
