We're excited to offer some new fruit trees this year - Peaches, Cherries, and Pawpaws!
Peaches
Peaches are increasingly becoming viable in Southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities. They are a bit of a risk though as our winters can occasionally be too cold for peach trees. These trees are Semi-Dwarf trees. Semi-Dwarf trees will grow to between 13 and 15 feet tall. These trees will need to be staked or supported for the first two years. They are dormant and bareroot, two years old and 5 to 7 feet tall with multiple branches. Bare root trees need to be planted within a day or two of when you pick them up from us so they don't dry out. The advantages to bare root trees are that they don't experience transplant shock when they are planted and they are easier to transport.
Contender: My favorite cold hardy peach that we can grow in Minnesota. It produces large and sweet, juicy fruit. It's what a peach should taste like. It is a freestone peach meaning the flesh separates easily from the peach pit. Contender blooms late in the spring, making it less likely to be hit by spring frost. It ripens mid to late August. It is self fruitful so you don't need a second tree for pollination.
Flamin' Fury PF24C: Is a newer peach variety. Has an awesome taste and is a bit firmer than Contender. It is a freestone peach meaning the flesh separates easily from the peach pit. It blooms later in the spring, making it less likely to get hit by spring frost. It ripens late August to early September. It is self fruitful so you don't need a second tree for pollination.
Carmine Jewel Bush Cherries
These are the same cherries we have at the farm and that we should have our first crop of this year. Carmine Jewel is technically a sour cherry, but is sweet enough to eat fresh. They are sweeter than traditional pie cherries but more tart than sweet cherries. They have a complex, rich flavor that we absolutely love! These plants are dormant and bareroot, two years old. The plants are bushes, not trees. They will grow 6 to 8 feet tall and are self fruitful, so you don't need a second plant for pollination.
Paw Paw
Also called "The Custard Apple" because of its delicious taste of vanilla custard. Paw Paws are native to the Upper Midwest including Iowa and Southern Wisconsin, but are increasingly being planted in Minnesota. The tree grows to about 25 feet and the fruit is 3"-6" long. Two trees are needed for pollination, so you will need a second tree in your yard or nearby. The fruit is used in pastries, ice cream, breads, cookies, etc. The tree is also an excellent ornamental and shade tree. The Paw Paw trees we are offering are 2 to 3 feet tall in 1 gallon pots.
These trees/bushes will be available starting Friday, May 8th for pickup at the farm. We are sorry but we are unable to ship trees.
