The kits come with 32 plants that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. The species were selected to provide a variety of colors and bloom times throughout the growing season. Finally, the plants selected are also relatively “well behaved” and easy to establish as transplants. These kits are a great opportunity to take the work out of figuring out what plants to order and how many. And to save money on plants!
This kits are great for a 6' x 6' garden plot (at 12" plant spacing) or up to a 9’ x 9’ garden plot (at 18" spacing between plants). Planted closer together the plants will fill in the space quicker and with the larger spacing it will take longer. Each plant in the kit comes in a 2.5" pot. Native plants do grow slowly at first. The plants that you get will be somewhat small and will not grow as rapidly the first year. First year seedlings might be a little "floppy" in the first year because they're still establishing their roots, but they'll come back strong in year two. All of these plants are perennials and should be long term plants for your garden or landscaping.
We are partnering with Karin and Dana Jokela of Sogn Valley Farm, which is located near Northfield, to offer these native plants. Karin is an ecologist and expert on pollinator conservation. Many of the seeds for these plants were collected from remnant prairie and oak savanna on their farm. They start all the plants in their on farm greenhouse. These plants are certified organic.
